CALHOUN – Bowater Credit Union Members Joyce Johnson and Bill Luecken have each won a $1,000 Pay It Forward prize for their favorite non-profits doing good in the five counties eligible for credit union membership, Isaiah 117 House and McMinn Co. Amateur Radio Club (MCARC), respectively.
Bowater Credit Union has asked its members to nominate their favorite non-profit helping people in the counties eligible for credit union membership: Bradley, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, and Polk. Five $1,000 prizes are awarded each year, and Isaiah 117 House and MCARC are the final winners of the 2019 prizes.
Isaiah 117 House Bradley County will be “a place always ready to take in the children of this region in their time of need,” writes Johnson. “When children are removed from their homes out of concern for their welfare, they are usually brought to the Department of Children’s Services Offices to await placement with a foster family. This wait can be several hours to nearly a full day.” Instead, Isaiah 117 House will provide a comforting home where these children can be brought to wait – “a place that is safe with friendly and loving volunteers who provide clean clothes, smiles, toys, and snuggly blankets.”
Isaiah 117 House Bradley County is currently raising funds and working towards a house in Bradley County. If you’re interested in volunteering or making a contribution, contact Renee Curry, Bradley County Expansion Coordinator at [email protected].
The McMinn County Amateur Radio Club “in addition to serving as a venue for promoting amateur radio has a core value of community service and providing emergency communication,” writes Luecken. “As a testament to the critical need provided for by these services is the fact that after the November 30, 2016 tornado in Athens the MCARC emergency radio repeater network was the only communication system capable of county wide communication.”
MCARC welcomes financial support, but is especially seeking new members interested in learning more about HAM radio and the important service MCARC provides. Learn more and find upcoming meeting information at mcminnarc.com
The Pay It Forward program will continue in 2020, and that means any member of Bowater Credit Union can nominate their favorite non-profit for a $1,000 Pay It Forward prize. Five prizes will be given out in 2020, and the deadline to be considered for the next prize is February 29, 2020.
Bowater Credit Union began the Pay It Forward program in 2010 as a way to give back to the community it serves. Since the program’s inception, Bowater CU has given $45,000 to various charities making a difference in our community. For more information, visit the News & Info page.
