We have had multiple members report receiving a phone call that appeared on the caller ID to be from 423-336-7268, which is the credit union’s main number.  The caller claimed to be from the credit union and claimed to be issuing the member a new debit card due to fraud. The caller requested a PIN from the member.

Thankfully these members were aware that Bowater Credit Union will never ask you for your debit card PIN, and that we cannot set your PIN as the caller was claiming.  (PIN numbers for Bowater Credit Union debit cards are set by the member using an automated system that the member calls).

If you receive a call that appears on caller ID to be from 336-7268 ask for the caller’s name and call our main number 336-7268. Why? With the the spoofing technology being used they can make it appear that they are calling from our number but they can not receive calls from it.

This scam is a combination of spoofing (where the call appears to come from a legitimate source) and phishing (where the caller tries to get private information from the potential victim).

If you believe you have received a similar call, please contact the credit union immediately at 423-336-7268 so we can protect your account and keep other members safe with notification.
