Bowater Credit Union Member Jason Layman has won a $1,000 Pay It Forward prize for his favorite non-profit doing good in our area, the Meigs County Historical Society.
Bowater Credit Union asks its members to nominate their favorite non-profit helping people in the counties eligible for credit union membership: Bradley, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, and Polk. Up to five $1,000 prizes are awarded yearly, and Meigs Historical Society is the second winner of 2024.
Mr. Layman states, “The Meigs County Historical Society operates the Meigs County Museum and Veterans Courtyard. The facilities are staffed with volunteers and are open to the public for research and tours. The mission of the Historical Society is to collect and preserve historical artifacts and histories for future generations. Being a non-profit organization, the Historical Society depends on grants, gifts, and donations to maintain and operate the Museum.”
Mr. Layman explains the importance and impact the money can make on the Meigs County Museum, “This application is made on their behalf for funds needed to help maintain and restore one of their buildings, the Robert A Smith Law office. This building is one of the few buildings in Decatur listed on the National Register of Historical Places. At present it is not open to public, due to needed repairs. Having it accessible again will definitely add to the tourist traffic in the downtown area and the much needed restoration needed will help to preserve more history for future generations.”

The Pay It Forward program will continue through 2024 and will award up to three more prizes. Any member of Bowater Credit Union can nominate their favorite non-profit for a $1,000 Pay It Forward prize. The deadline to be considered for the next prize is August 31, 2024.
Bowater Credit Union began the Pay It Forward program in 2010 to give back to the community it serves. Since the program’s inception, Bowater CU has given $57,000 to various charities making a difference in our community. For more information, visit BowaterECU.org.
