With the shift to EMV chip cards there has also been a shift to what is called a shimmer. A “Shimmer” is just an evolved version of ATM skimming.  It is a slim card-shaped device that is wedged or shimmed into the card reader between the chip on a card and chip reader inside the ATM. The data that is collected by the shimmer is used to create a magnetic stripe cards. However, it cannot be used to create a chip-based card, since the chip has additional security components.
