Congratulations are in order! Long-time employee Tonsie Maxwell is retiring from Bowater Credit Union. All members are encouraged to drop in to the Calhoun Branch on her last day, Wednesday, January 15, to offer their congratulations and swap stories.

Tonsie began her career with the credit union in 1990 as a temporary employee through a local agency that staffed for the credit union. Tonsie remembers that after the interview she called the agency and said she wasn’t sure how she did, and that woman said she must have done well because they wanted her to start Monday!

After serving well in her temporary role, Tonsie accepted a full time position. That decision has benefited many over the years – members and staff alike. Tonsie has served as VP of Member Services while also serving as Calhoun Branch Manager, and Keith Street Branch Manager. She has also been the leader of our IRA Team for many years, guiding the certification of multiple Certified IRA Specialists throughout the credit union.
When asked what she liked most about her job, Tonsie did choose her work with IRAs. ” I have made a lot of friends over the years from working with these accounts.” But Tonsie also knows what a difference she’s made at crucial times for our members, when a family member passes away. “I hope I was able to help them through a stressful time in making changes to their accounts with as much ease as possible.”

She’ll be missed by her coworkers too. One IRA Specialist she trained referred to Tonsie as the “IRA Queen”, and said that because of Tonsie’s careful training and support while teaching IRAs she now has the confidence in herself to learn anything.  Tonsie inspired songs, and was surprised on her fiftieth birthday by a black-bedecked team and office.   She connived with a co-worker to pull pranks on one of our Gold Travel Club trips. She’s made lifelong friends and we expect to see her around the credit union as a friend and member in the coming years.
