Did you receive a call about suspicious transactions on your debit card?
To protect our members, Bowater Credit Union monitors debit card transactions twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to search for suspicious transactions. If you (or a thief) uses your debit card in a way that is not usual for YOU, you will get a phone call asking you to verify the suspicious transactions.
Texts or phone calls that say your debit card was compromised is also a popular method scam artists employ to get you to tell them your debit card number (see Identity Theft Resource Page). If you aren’t sure that the phone call you are receiving is legitimate, hang up and call Bowater Credit Union directly at a number you are familiar with (such as the phone numbers listed on this page).
A legitimate call from Bowater Credit Union’s fraud detection center will ask for your 5-digit zip code, and will tell you the last four digits on your card number to verify your identity. The recorded message will then list the suspicious transactions and ask you to verify if they are legitimate or not.
If our Fraud Detection Center reaches voicemail the message will state that a temporary hold may be placed on your debit card until the transactions can be verified, and will ask you to call 1-866-750-9107. The message will also give you a Personal Message Code to use when calling the number.
Bowater Credit Union will NOT ask for your full debit card number, or your social security number.
